Probably my favorite thing about smart phones is all the apps that make our lives easier. I use two apps for training that allow me to create snapshots of my workouts that are so helpful to achieving my goals.

1) TrueCoach. This app is free to me through my trainer who helps me with my strength training. He uploads my workouts, which are currently three times per week. This app allows me to see how-to videos for each exercise loaded and it allows me to put in notes and feedback for both me and my coach to review.

2) Training Peaks. My coach loads all cardio and strength workouts into my TP calendar with notes for each. After each workout, I rate the workout with smiley faces and then I add comments… Maybe it was hard to keep my heartrate in Zone 3, maybe I could have gone longer, or maybe the wind was strong, so my times were slower than normal, yet I felt well. It’s all useful information that I can review in the moment and in the future.

These forms of goal check-ins allow me to review how my body absorbs training and to pro-actively course correct if necessary. Life happens, whether that means not sleeping well, the arrival of niggling body aches, or increased family commitments. These apps and goal check-ins help me feel confident in the work I’ve done while adjusting what I need to without sacrificing my larger goal.

Whether planning for retirement, a wedding, or a fitness goal, check-ins are essential!

They let you regroup on the big picture and make adjustments before you are too far off course and need to abandon ship.
