As moms, daughters, professionals, and even mountain climbers, such as myself, we all sometimes deal with a lack of motivation. Lack of motivation stems from many situations we face in our day-to-day lives. Whether it stems from procrastination, overwhelm, or no clarity around our goals, a lack of motivation can halt many goals and aspirations for you. However, having a lack of motivation does not have to define you.
I believe that staying motivated translates to the many different habits and routines I have created for myself that keep me going full steam ahead towards my goals. For one, I am a “box checker” when it comes to my goals and staying motivated towards my goals, so if I can do it as a mom of 7, you should be able to do so too. I would love to share with you some ways that you can prioritize your tasks and goals to stay motivated, as I often do myself.
Evaluate Your Habits
Ask yourself this question: Are you creating good habits or bad habits surrounding your goals? We all tend to develop bad habits around our goals. Whether it’s working out 15 minutes a day and drinking more water or planning how you aim to go into business for yourself, your habits are the framework around the success of your goals. Whether procrastination or ineffective time management skills, bad habits around your goals can set you up to lack motivation or success for your goals.
One thing I do is take the time to prepare and plan for my climbs ahead of time. Creating this habit allows me to achieve greater success with every summit I make and learn from each summit I do not. It is also important to remember that the benefit to any habit is with some time and determination, you can turn bad habits into good ones while pushing you back onto the motivation train towards achieving your goals.
Prioritize Your Time Effectively
As humans, we tend to measure things accordingly, such as weight, distance, height, spacing, and especially time. We all are given the same 24 hours in 1 day, so how you design your day is solely up to you. Prioritizing your time productively goes beyond good time management. It’s focused on what works best for you to achieve your tasks successfully and stay motivated to get them done. If you want to stay motivated, look into blocking out the time to complete your tasks or to-dos. When I am feeling less motivated, I make something measurable such as I am going to do whatever task I am trying to complete for 25 minutes and then take a break.
This is called the Pomodoro method, and it truly works best for me. When I commit to staying motivated for a certain amount of time before taking a break, it allows me to get rid of the emotional side of motivation. It makes the time to complete something more efficient and effective for me. It can also help you stay motivated for longer because you see the success of that small amount of time.
Celebrate Your Accomplishments
Most importantly, when prioritizing tasks to stay motivated, I highly recommend celebrating the accomplishments along the way. Celebrate your big wins and small wins when you stay motivated and complete your tasks accordingly. Most people will find greater motivation when they celebrate even the small victories. Even in the smallest form, the reward pushes you entirely out of a motivation slump so quickly.
For me, the goal of reaching the summit is the ultimate thrill, but when I cannot summit, like when I climbed K2, I still celebrate the fact I even climbed the mountain at all. That alone keeps me going on this journey to climb the 7 second highest summits in the world because I can always try at it again. Also, don’t forget to share those wins with your loved ones to celebrate along with you. Your achievements can also prove to be their motivation as well.
