Today’s lesson installment is all about becoming, evolving, and growing. We have so many if/then, cause/effect, before/after dichotomies in our human lives, that I know I sometimes forget that its really about the doing of it all. The becoming.

Lesson 3

___

It’s Who We Become in the Process of our Pursuits that is Most Important

Climbing the mountain isn’t important, it is who we become in the pursuit of climbing the mountain that is most important.

This really hit me.

Training, balancing, eating, achieving, and working toward the summit of Everest was important. However, it was really the act of doing all these things was more important.

I don’t tell my kids to set big goals and then sit back and see what happens. I try to show them that it’s all the day-to-day “doing” of our goals that make them achievable.

In the preparation of my summit expedition, yes, I didn’t get to participate in as many fun activities. I had to plan out my week and be very intentional with my time. I missed some little things here and there, but that was because I had a bigger thing to work toward.

And, was it worth it? 100x over! It was an amazing journey, and it was an amazing way to connect with my kids in a new way, be a beginner again at many things, and do something for the first time with a lot of unknowns. It was showing my kids how to show up in that space of discomfort and work for goals, and how discipline with schedule actually creates more freedom and space to achieve those goals. It was also about how when you set out to do something authentically, the world helps make it come true! Things you didn’t expect show up, and people you didn’t know shine new lights on your path.

The practice and “doing” of our goals allow us to practice life in new ways, discover ourselves, and open our eyes to our surroundings and others in incredible ways! When we are in the process of our goals, the “doingness”, we have to be openminded by default, and that is something the world can always use more of! When we are openminded, we grow and connect in new ways? Who doesn’t want a little more of that in their life?
