“Turkey Weak… Turkey Power… This Turkey doesn’t like grandma’s shower…”
To this day, I still remember my “Turkey Note.”
When I was a kid growing up in Michigan, we used to get together with my Dad’s side of the family and do a huge Thanksgiving Day meal. My dad is one of 11, and our get together would not only consist of members from his side of the family, but also include his cousins, their kids, and so on. Needless to say, it was wild and wonderful chaos! All the kids had so much fun with so many people around, constant games, and shenanigans while making precious family memories.
One of our family traditions was a game called “Turkey Notes”. Some of the aunts and uncles would make a single rhyme like the above about one of the kids and everyone else had to guess which “turkey” it was identifying. Well, the last year I remember going and playing, the above rhyme clue was created about me. My grandma had a rugged shower in the basement with a shower curtain hanging up around a small space on the concrete floor. The water drained into a drain right on the freezing floor, and with the room being so dark down there, it was a generally terrifying space for a young child!
It’s funny the things we remember. I think this silly little rhyme really stuck with me because, despite me being a scared little “turkey”, the tradition made me feel seen, loved, and understood. Deep down, we all want to feel like that, kids and adults alike. The “Turkey Notes” game is one I loved playing! I always wondered what the clue was going to be for me and my close family members.
Drop me a line or come say “hi” on Instagram with your funny and heartfelt Thanksgiving Day memories. I’d love to hear what traditions you and your family have, as we are looking for another one or two to start!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Jenn
